Try Our Dog Agility Classes – It’s Doggie Fun for your Dog and You!

Agility is one of the fastest growing dog sports in Singapore. It’s popular because it’s exciting to watch and more importantly, fun for both dog and owner. If you have been to a Singapore Kennel Club Dog Show, you will probably notice that the obedience ring is most crowded whenever the Agility Trials are taking place. For those yet to be introduced to the sport of dog agility, here’s a brief description of what it is all about.

What is Dog Agility Training
Agility is a dog sport where the handler leads his dog through a serious of obstacles in a race against time.

In agility, both speed and precision is important as each run is scored based on time as well as faults e.g. the number of bar jumps knocked over. The placement of the obstacles in the agility course is different at every trial and is decided by the presiding judge in accordance with the Singapore Kennel Club guidelines. The obstacles are numbered and the dog is to clear the obstacles in a sequential order based on the numbering. The complexity of the course is based on the trialing level of the dog with the novice courses being easier for example compared to that of the open level.

However, regardless of the competing level, the course is designed such that it is impossible for the dog to negotiate through without the guidance and intervention of the handler. Hence, other than speed, control and co-ordination between dog and handler is vital in this sport.

Types of Agility Competition in Singapore

In Singapore, Agility is divided into 2 categories, the standard Agility and Jumpers. The difference between the Agility and Jumpers Trials is the presence of contact obstacles in the course like the A-Frame, See-Saw, Dogwalk and Pause Table. In the standard Agility Trials, these contact obstacles are present while in the Jumpers Trials, they are noticeably absent with the course made up mainly from various types of jumps.

Here is a video of SKC members practicing agility at the West Coast dog run and above all, having lots of fun with their dogs. You too can have fun by joining a dog agility class.

Benefits of Agility

  • Health benefit

In dog agility, the handler’s role is to guide the dog through the obstacles in the right sequence. If the dog takes the wrong obstacle, it is often the handler’s fault for failing to point the right path out to the dog. Hence, having superior control over the dog plus a good strategy, couple with certain amount of running and mobility is required of the handler. Agility is thus a good way to exercise, both for dog and handler. In Singapore, where most are too busy working, dog agility is one way to keep us fit and healthy.

  • Control over your dog

Go to an Agility Trial and you will see dogs barking excitedly just before the start of their run; dogs trained the positive way love agility and get all excited and distracted whenever they are about to make a run. Thus being able to control your dog is such levels of distraction will only help improve your overall control of your dog.  With good control, you can prevent your dog from misbehaving and more importantly, keep it out of danger.

  • Builds confidence of the dog

Some dogs are more shy then others. Whether due to lack of socialization or otherwise, these dogs generally lack confidence. Agility is a great way to help dogs build confidence naturally; we have seen many dogs come out of their shell once they become good at agility.  If you have a shy dog, this is one reason why you should seriously consider signing up for Agility classes.

  • Fun for you and your dog

Agility is nothing but fun! It’s also a great way for both dog and owner to enjoy a mutually enjoyable activity together and from their build up owner-dog bonding.
