Dexter Sim and Millie Wins Again – A National Dog Walk 2012 Update
Dexter Sim and his Border Collie Millie are making the news again. This time around, it’s winning the Superweavers Challenge, a Dog Sport contest held as part of the National Dog Walk 2012.
The Superweavers Challenge is a contest of speed. Two sets of 60 weave poles are placed side by side, parallel to each other forming 2 race lanes. Dogs are paired against each other by means of a lucky draw. At the word go, 2 dogs at a time, each guided by its handlers are to negotiate the weave poles as fast as they can. The first to cross the finish line wins that particular race and on moves to challenge the winners of the other races, while the loser is knocked out. To win the overall event, the dog must win every race and in the process, knock out every challenger that stands in its way. In all, 12 dog and handler teams, consisting mainly of season dog sport enthusiast participated. The win is not surprising, considering Dexter’s outstanding track record in dog sport plus the fact that he is one of only two WMA Certified Agility Instructors in Asia (the other being Debra Sim, his spouse). It’s the timing that Millie managed to clock that was impressive. She took a mere 19.59 seconds to finish the race, way ahead of the 2nd placed competitor. And here’s the video clip of that winning run.
The National Dog Walk is an annual event organized by the Pets Enterprises & Traders Association, Singapore (PETAS) and The Peoples Association. Billed as the Dog Sport event of the year, its main objectives are to:
- Promote Dog sport
- Allow dog owner the opportunity to experience dog sport with their pets
- Educate the public on responsible dog ownership
- Showcase the work of canine charities such as dogs shelters
- Commemorate the Singapore National Day
Held at the Hougang Stadium on 12 August 2012 from 3 pm to 10 pm, this year’s event was extra special. Firstly, it marks the first time in Singapore dog sport history that a dog sport challenge is held at a stadium rather than at a dog run or the Singapore Expo. More importantly, our Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong was the guest of honour and officially flagged off event.
Dog Training Singapore congratulates Mr Dexter Sim for stamping his class yet again at the local dog sport scene with yet another outstanding win!
